Case Study: Combined Heat and Power pyrolysis technology

The Alcom-THL joint venture is pioneering the use of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) technology to produce biochar and bio-oil in India and the Philippines.

The process is super-circular. It upcycles waste biomass to create biochar, which removes carbon dioxide. Syngas, a byproduct, is fed back into the system to generate power and makes it run. Communities, industries, and utilities all benefit.

How it works

1. Rice husks or other waste biomass is pyrolysed in a reactor

2. The pyrolysis process creates biochar, which captures carbon in a stable state

3. Gases created during pyrolysis are used to help create bio-oil, which can then be blended into low-carbon fuels

4. Syngas is filtered, then recycled back into the pyrolysis reactor to renewably power more carbon removal
